The Hanged Man--How to use the Law of Reversal

In occultism, one of the most important lessons that you can learn is how to use the Law of Reversal. The Hanged Man is its symbolism. Through the Law of Reversal, we learn to speak, act, and think in a different way from "others."

Hanging by a Thread

The picture of the Hanged Man (Rider-Waite deck) shows a man hanging by one foot by a rope. The rope seems pretty beefy, right? This represents our current state of thoughts and beliefs. Most people, by the time they're adults, have a lot of their beliefs "set." Those beliefs are pretty hard to budge -- if they budge AT ALL. But if you were to REALLY study those beliefs, would they stand up to our TRUTH factor, or would they, in fact, be hanging by a thread?

Appearances Can Deceive

Remember the Strength lesson -- where we learned to look at our fears differently? The Hanged Man is asking us to look at our beliefs and truths and how we look at the world around us. Our PERCEPTION. Do you look at things through rose-colored glasses? Or through "doom and gloom?" Do you have trust issues, or do you trust everyone you meet? Is everything black-and-white, or are there some gray areas? Again, WHERE DO THESE COME FROM? They are actually just thoughts in your head! Think about this for a minute. Are they REAL? Look deeper than the surface.

Changing Our Environment

Our environment has two aspects -- inner and outer. Most of us are probably brought up thinking that "it is what it is." You were -- and ARE -- a PRODUCT of your environment. We have discussed this over and over in this Series. Until these lessons, you probably didn't realize that you have the ability to change your environment. In order to make changes, though, you need to make sure that your INNER environment is healthy and balanced. This, of course, means changing your THOUGHTS and how you put them out into the universe (The Fool and Magician). How do we make sure our inner environment produces the outer environment that we envision? By using the Hanged Man's numbers!

The Numerology

In the previous lesson, I asked you to remember that the second number -- of each card past The Hermit -- is the AGENCY that acts upon the POWER of the first number. So in the Hanged Man, we have the number 12. This means that the agency we work through, to change our environment, is OUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND -- the High Priestess (2). How do we do that? Through the POWER of the Magician (1). In other words, FOCUS. Our task -- and a rigorous one -- is to LOOK AT THINGS FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE. Thus, the Hanged Man. We may need to turn our world upside down and look at things with fresh eyes and new ways of thinking. When you can do this, you will realize that YOU alone, through the power of the One, are creating your environment.

Matter vs. Reality

Physics tells us that "solid matter" is not real. It is a bunch of atoms vibrating together to form something. It's real to our eyes because of our perception. It is actually just energy. EVERYTHING is energy. Therefore, we are not trying to change THINGS in our environment but the energy -- the only reality -- that surrounds them. We can do this through perspective and adjusting our thoughts; therefore, creating the environment we want.

Connection through Meditation

Another way to look at the Hanged Man is through the lens of meditation. The Hanged Man is suspended upside down and does not have the capability of retreat. He uses this time to contemplate his situation. This is his chance to really CONNECT to his subconscious and make adjustments. Meditation is a very powerful way to do this. Over time -- and with practice -- you can even connect with super-consciousness and FEEL it. It's a wonderful feeling. I've done this once, quite by accident, lol. It is a feeling that is hard to describe. You lose all sense of self. You ARE all of humanity in its full capacity to LOVE. It only lasted for a few seconds, but I will never forget it.

Exercises

  1. Find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed. Concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply. Now breathe naturally.

  2. Take a good look at the Hanged Man card. What perspective do you have that needs to be changed to move forward? Where are you stuck? Where did this perspective come from? Write in your journal.

  3. This week, whenever you form an opinion or perception, stop and ask yourself if it is the TRUTH through universal LAWS or an illusion through human eyes? Write.

  4. Meditate each day -- for 5 minutes only -- on the Hanged Man card. Just look at it, don't think about it. Write what comes up.

Final Thoughts

To me, the Hanged Man means looking at things through the lens of Oneness and not as a separate entity. If everyone could FEEL what it's like to live in the actual energy of LOVE every single day and not be prone to believe -- sometimes without question -- everything we see or hear, we could, indeed, have "heaven on earth."

Until next time...
